Surface Preparation: Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of oil, grease, wax, rust, mildew, chalk and loose or scaling paint. Cement based water proofing paints should be removed. Glossy surfaces must be dulled. Un-weathered areas such as eaves, porch ceilings, overhangs and protected wall areas should be washed with a Woodluxe™ All‐In‐One Wood Cleaner (018) and rinsed with a strong stream of water from a garden hose or power washer to remove contaminants that can interfere with proper adhesion. Stains from mildew must be removed by cleaning with Woodluxe™ All‐In‐One Wood Cleaner (018) prior to coating the surface. Caution: Refer to the (018) Woodluxe Cleaner technical data and material safety data sheets for instructions on its proper use and handling. All new masonry surfaces must be power washed or brushed thoroughly with stiff fiber bristles to remove loose particles. New masonry substrates must be allowed to cure for 30 days before priming or painting. Poured or pre-cast concrete with a very smooth surface should be etched or abraded to promote adhesion, after removing all form release agents and curing compounds.
When applying on bare or previously coated cedar or redwood, test an area for tannic acid bleeding. It will be particularly noticeable when applying lighter colored films.
This product must be able to penetrate. The moisture content of the wood or other surfaces should not exceed 15% to allow for proper penetration.
Mildew: Stains from mildew must be removed by cleaning with Woodluxe™ All‐In‐One Wood Cleaner (018) prior to coating the surface. Caution: Refer to the 015, 016, 017 and 018 technical data and safety data sheets for instructions on their proper use and handling.
Difficult Substrates: Benjamin Moore offers a number of specialty primers for use over difficult substrates such as bleeding woods, grease stains, crayon markings, hard glossy surfaces, or other substrates where paint adhesion or stain suppression is a particular problem.
Application: Prior to staining, ensure you have enough product to complete an entire section. In can color may differ from the final dried finish, therefore it is recommended to test a small area for color acceptance. When using multiple containers, intermix stain to ensure color uniformity. Stir thoroughly before and during use. Apply one or two coats. Application for best results use a premium custom-blended nylon/polyester brush with firm bristles, or premium roller select nap good for surface texture.
Temperature and humidity may affect drying time. In can color may differ from the final dried finish. Apply evenly, allowing the stain to penetrate into the wood. Brush from dry into wet areas, stopping at natural breaks, i.e., stairs or edges. To minimize lapping, always maintain a wet edge. In can color may differ from the final dried finish. On siding , apply the stain on a section of 2 or 3 boards completely across the length of the boards. Continue by coating the next section of boards in the same manner until the area is completed. Never stop staining in the middle of the board; continue until a natural break is reached. Avoid staining in direct sunlight as this will prevent the product from penetrating properly and causing lap marks. Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 40 °F and 90 °F.
Dry Time: Dry Time at 77 °F, relative humidity 50%, touch 1 hour, can be recoated if needed after 4 hours. Temperature and humidity may affect dry times.
Coverage: 300 - 450 square feet per gallon. Spread rate is based on surface texture and porosity. Be sure to estimate the right amount of stain for the job. This will ensure color uniformity and minimize the disposal of excess material.
Clean Up: Wash brushes, rollers, and other painting tools in warm soapy water immediately after use. Spray equipment should be given a final rinse with mineral spirits to prevent rusting.
