We have a stylish selection of interior doors that can elevate the look and feel of any room. You can find interior doors from Brosco, Jeld-Wen, and many other leading brands in our store.
Here are some things to take into consideration before buying an interior door:
1.Check if Pre-hung or Slab
It may surprise you to know there are 2 different types of interior doors: pre-hung doors and slab doors.
A pre-hung interior door comes ready to be installed and includes a door frame, hinges and a pre-drilled bore for a handle set.
A slab door still needs some work and assembly before it's ready. They arrive unfinished without any stain or paint. There isn't a frame, hinges, or a pre-drilled bore for a handle set.
2. Measuring your interior door
Measuring for a new interior slab door is pretty easy. All you need to do is measure the height, width, and the slab thickness. We recommend taking three width measurements (at the top, middle, and bottom) and going with the smallest one.
Measuring for a pre-hung interior door is a little bit more involved. First, you need to be able to see the door's "rough opening" - this is the structural frame that surrounds the door. This may involve prying the moulding away from the wall.
Pre-hung interior doors come in several different standard sizes. It's important to choose a standard door size, including the frame, that fits within the dimension of the rough opening.
To measure the height, measure from the floor to the bottom of the header framing. After measuring the height, you should measure the width and jamb (wall) depth.
3. Check if left-hand or right-hand opening
Before purchasing a new interior door, you should note if the door is right-hand or left-hand opening. If there is no handle to verify, you can check which side the hinges are on.
This may sound obvious - but mistakes do happen!
There are a few different types of interior doors for you to choose from.
Wood Doors
Wood makes an excellent material for interior doors as it can be stained or painted to match your interior design scheme. Ring's End has solid wood pine interior doors and birch doors in a variety of sizes and styles.
You can also find high-quality composite wood interior doors in our store. This material helps interior doors become more resistant against warping, shrinking, and cracking. However, they are not stainable like solid wood doors.
Hollow Core or Solid Core
When buying a wood interior door, you can choose a hollow core or a solid core. Hollow core interior doors are usually lighter and cheaper. However, solid core doors can reduce sound transmission by up to 50%.
French Doors
French doors have a traditional elegance and their glass panels help bring light and warmth to any room. Ring's End has pine french doors in a variety of sizes for you to choose from.
Sliding Doors
Although typically used as closet doors, sliding doors are now becoming popular in other areas of the home as they save a lot of space.
Folding Doors
Folding doors like Bi-fold doors are another space-saving option. They're great for closets, laundry rooms, room dividers and places where space is at a premium.
Interior doors generally cost from $50 up to $500. The price difference depends if the door has a hollow or solid core and if it's a pre-hung or slab door.
The best interior doors are ones that are strong, durable, and perfectly complement your home. For this reason, many people prefer solid wood interior doors that have more weight than composite doors.
A pre-hung door comes attached with a frame. They are usually more expensive than slab doors. So if your current frame is not warped and in good condition, you'll probably prefer a slab door.
Yes, you can replace an interior door without replacing the frame by buying a slab door.
Replacing an existing interior door is relatively straightforward if the new door is the same size. If you're installing an internal door into a partition wall, buying a pre-hung door will make things easier as it already has the frame attached.
