Surface Preparation: All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from dirt, wax, grease, glue, and other contaminants or penetration and adhesion will be affected.
Application: Apply Old Masters Tung Oil with a lint-free cloth or by hand. On large surfaces or in high humidity, thinning with mineral spirits will improve application. Up to one (1) part mineral spirits to one (1) part Tung Oil may be used; however, thinning beyond this ratio will result in noncompliance with VOC regulations. When the entire area has been coated, wipe off excess oil with a soft, lint-free cloth. If a second coat is desired, allow the first coat to dry, then rub down with 0000 steel wool. Repeat steps 1 and 2. Do not apply more coats than the wood can absorb. Thinning Up to one (1) part mineral spirits to one (1) part Tung Oil may be used; however, thinning beyond this ratio will result in noncompliance with VOC regulations.
Coverage: Approximately 300 to 400 square feet per gallon depending upon method of application and the type and porosity of wood.
Dry Time: Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 60° and 90°F and humidity is between 30% and 70%. At 50% relative humidity and 70°F, 100% Tung Oil will dry in approximately 8 to 12 hours.
Clean-Up: For cleanup, we recommend using a cleaning solvent like mineral spirits or paint thinner. Make sure that is compliant in your air quality management district. Check with your local government agencies to ensure proper compliance.
